Oh, Yikes! : History's Grossest Moments by Joy Masoff

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Hi it is me again.

Two in one day--I am on a roll.

Oh, Yikes! is one of the best books that has facts about history.

Did you know that Yo-yo's used to be a deadly weapon?

How about that an 11th-century Norwegian king decided to teach his ungrateful subjects a lesson and appointed his dog, Saur to the throne; the pooch ruled for three years.

All these and more facts are found in this book. It's the perfect book for boys and girls, and to torture your parents with facts that drive them nuts.

I give this book 5 bookmarks out of 5.

Assorted Foxtrot by Bill Amend

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Now I've been gone a long time.

I was fighting the villain school work.

So let us get started.

Foxtrot by any other name is an awesome comic. Assorted Foxtrot is one of the best Foxtrot collection that I've ever read. It's so funny. Anybody who likes comic strips will like this.

Jason is smart, and he gets his brother, Peter and Paige to pay him to do their school work. He is also an evil genius, so he maniacally tortures his brother and sister at the same time.

Their dad can't cook a hamburger to save his life...or at least, not BURN himself while cooking a hamburger! And mom is trying to write a book review column...hey, does that sound familiar to you?

Sounds like a typical, normal family to you, right? But when you add in Jason's pet iguana, Quincy, that chews up all of Paige's stuff, and Jason's friend Marcus who gets into all kinds of trouble with him...you get the more than typical comic strip.

Toss in all kinds of subject matter for humor, and you get "Assorted Foxtrot".

I give Assorted Foxtrot by Bill Amend 4 book marks out of 5.

Midnight For Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The Charlie Bone series is a really good series. It is so good, we're going to review it one book at a time.

In "Midnight For Charlie Bone", Charlie finds out he has an extraordinary power, and he ends up having to attend a special school called Bloor's Academy. There he meets Fidelio, his new friend an a really good musician.

Charlie also meets Olivia Vertigo, Gabriel Silk, and Emma Tolly. They all have a special power of some kind. Well, most of them do anyway.

Charlie has two grandmothers that he lives with...one is good, and one is, well, not so good. His mom also lives with him, but his dad mysteriously died. And that is part of the mystery Charlie tries to solve.

His best friend in the entire world is a kid named Benjamin Brown, and his dog is named Runnerbean (cool, huh?).

In this book, they are trying to save a girl who is hypnotized, Emma, from the evil people: Asa Pike, Manfred Bloor, and Zelda Dobinski.

"Midnight For Charlie Bone" isn't all that scary...at least, I don't think so. But you might not want to be reading it at night. It's kind of a cross between Harry Potter and a book by Roald Dahl.

I give "Midnight For Charlie Bone" ten out of five bookmarks...I REALLY like this series. I recommend it for ages 10 and up. Even my mom (and I'm not saying how old she is) would like this book. If I can ever get her to read it...

Tomo--Christian Manga

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I was looking for a "different" kind of Japanese manga. I stumbled onto "Tomo", which is about a girl that is from Japan but lives in the US with her grandfather in San Francisco.

She is trained in martial arts, and her grandfather is a martial arts master. Creatures from another world are after a sword. Tomo has the sword. But, who is Tomo? You'll just have to read it!

The second book is called "My Double-Edged Life". In this one we find out more about the creatures from the first book, and how Tomo is able to protect the sword. But, again...who is Tomo?

You have to read them to find out!!

I recommend this series to readers who like fantasy/action manga and ages 10 and up. I give "Tomo" four out of five bookmarks because the books have lots of good stuff in them, no bad stuff, and lots of action, which I like!

Time2Fly--Christian Manga Series

I love to read manga, but my mom worries about me reading bad stuff. So when I found these, I thought, "Hey, we both win!"

"Time2Fly" is about Laurel. She is the only "normal" person in her family. Her little brother has best selling books. Her dad is a renowned scientist. And her mom is a brain surgeon.

She is upset that she is normal and wishes that her whole family was normal. But when her dad gets captured by Darchon, Laurel is forced to join up with some robotic flies and go back in time to save her dad.

"Turtle Trouble" continues the story, but now Laurel has to protect Benjamin Franklin...I'm not making this stuff up!
These are pretty good. I wish they had a little more action and excitement. But they have good storylines and the villains aren't bad, for what you can come up with to fight robotic flies, that is!

I would recommend this series for anyone who is looking for alternative manga that is clean, and for ages 8 and up. I give "Time2fly" 3 out of five bookmarks...because I crave more action!

Beyond the Deep Woods: Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I love fantasy books and this one is good. But if you do not like sad stories, you might want to skip this one.

It gets better, but there's a lot of sad stuff in it.

This book is about a boy named Twig. He thinks he's a wood troll, but he finds out he's really not. He doesn't know who or what he really is.

He "accidentally" strays from the path that's safe, and wanders off into The Deep Woods, where he meets some new friends, encounters some hidden dangers, and comes face to face with some REALLY. BAD. GOBLINS.

At the end, he meets...oh, never mind! You don't really want me to tell, do you??

"The Deep Woods" has some scary scenes, if you want to call them that. I prefer to call them intense. But for little children, they might be too scary. I recommend this series for age 10 and up (my mom even likes these books!).

I give "The Deep Woods" four out of five bookmarks. Watch for my review of book #2 coming soon!

Skullduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy

"Skullduggery Pleasant" is a good teenaged read! It isn't really for younger kids, because there is some mild language and some scary parts.

It has heroes, action, and adventure...all the things I love. And of course, some very powerful villians.

Skullduggery Pleasant is the main character's name...and he's a skeleton with personality! He's a skeleton, magician, and detective who packs a gun.

He meets up with this girl named Stephanie, while she is trying to find out if she has inherited any magical powers from her grandfather.

Skullduggery and his friends have to defeat the evil Serpine before he gets to the book of names. If he doesn't, Serpine will take control of every person in the magical world.

Do they get there in time? What kinds of wild characters will they have to fight? How does it all turn out? And does Stephanie have magical abilities, or is she just like us?

This is the first in a series, so I'm eager for more:-) I give "Skullduggery Pleasant" four bookmarks out of five...because of the language...without that, it might have been just perfect:-)

My mom is Deena and she reviews books at A Peek At My Bookshelf and she is really good at it.
